Pine wood is the timber of the pine tree, sawn wood and sawdust, not the needle. It smells resinous first, with a dry sawn-timber body under that. The only direct sensory measurement of the wood tissue rated resin-like at 7.2 out of 10, far ahead of frankincense-like at 2.6 and carpenter's-shop or sawdust-like at 2.7. Herbal, peppery and citrus edges were rated 1.5 to 2.0 and stay minor. That is the opposite emphasis from pine needle oil, which trade suppliers call zesty and close to lime.

Scent Profile

Amber_resinous leads and it is the one measured number here. Resin-like scored 7.2 out of 10 on the wood itself, the top attribute by a wide margin, and frankincense-like at 2.6 adds an incense edge to the same facet. Eden Botanicals reaches the same place from the trade side with 'dry-balsamic'. Dry_woody is the carpenter's-shop and sawdust attribute at 2.7, plus the 'characteristic woody effect' ScenTree gives pine in general. Below sit green for the coniferous cast, citrus and aromatic_herbal, and fresh_spice, all four from attributes the study scored at only 1.5 to 2.0. Cooling_mentholic is the turpentine edge Eden Botanicals names. Sweet_vanillic follows ScenTree's note that the absolute is warmer and more caramelised than the oil. Sour is the wood-glue attribute. Earthy is not stated by any source and is held low rather than at zero.

Origin

Pinus sylvestris and related pines of Europe and northern Asia. Gas chromatography-olfactometry of the wood found degradation products of fatty acids to be the largest group of odour-active constituents, 69% of them (Schreiner, Bauer and Buettner, Scientific Reports, PMC5974339). Almost no commercial material matches this. Suppliers sell pine essential oil and pine absolute made from needles and twigs, and no manufacturer olfactive description for a material labelled 'pine wood' was found. Whether the perfumes tagged with this note use a wood-specific extract is not established.
