Spruce resin is the pitch that bleeds from a wound in spruce bark and hardens in the air. It is not the needle oil sold as spruce.
Scent Profile
Spruce Resin smells strongly aromatic, resinous and woody. It opens with a bright, slightly sweet pine note. As it warms, a balsamic, earthy core comes through. It is denser and more turpentine-like than fir resin, with a cool, terpenic edge. It carries a green, sappy note, like crushed needles.

Origin
Spruce resin is a trunk exudate. Resin flows out of damaged bark as a soft balm rich in essential oil. In air the oil evaporates, and the resin hardens into brittle deposits stuck to the trunk. Indigenous women in North America used it to caulk the seams of birch-bark canoes. In the nineteenth century woodsmen called gummers collected it and sold it to the first chewing gum makers. That is why it is better known as spruce gum. Raw Norway spruce resin is sold for natural perfumery and incense. No solvent extract of it was found in trade catalogues. Traded spruce oils and absolutes are made from needles and twigs.
Usage in Perfumery
Spruce resin appears in 20 perfumes on one large perfume database (2026-10-10), from mainstream to natural houses. Most pyramids place it in the heart, and some in the top beside fir needle. It gives a forest accord a resinous, balsamic body under the needle notes. It pairs with fir, cedar, labdanum and vetiver. Natural perfumers also use the raw resin as a fixative.
