Templin is the essential oil of silver fir cones. It smells balsamic and resinous first, then woody, with a crisp pinecone freshness over the top. A forum tasting note reports a sharp, varnish-like opening that settles within minutes into an ordinary conifer smell, deeper and darker than fir needle oil but shorter-lived. A supplier adds a delicate sweet trace that reads as fruit and vanilla. It is a niche material and is rarely produced today.

Origin

Steam-distilled from the cones of the silver fir, Abies alba, a European conifer. The needle-and-twig oil of the same tree is the common article and is published here as `fir`. Perfumer & Flavorist reports that cone oil 'is rarely produced these days' because the needle/twig and cone oils are so alike that a buyer cannot be sure a lot came only from cones. Rising Sun Botanicals sells a templin infused with additional fir resin, so some material on the market is not the plain distillate.

Usage in Perfumery

A conifer note used where fir needle would read too sharp and green. The balsamic weight suits forest, incense and fougere accords, and the woody depth sits under a needle-oil top rather than replacing it. The reported short longevity means it works as a heart lift, not as an anchor.
