About

Resin from the pistachio tree, used as a perfume note. It is balsamic and turpentine-sharp, with a piney lift and a green edge. In Iran the resin of Pistacia vera is sold as a local substitute for mastic. Its oil is mostly alpha-pinene, the same main constituent as mastic oil. No source describes its smell directly, so the picture also draws on mastic and terebinth.

Scent Profile

Pistachio Tree Resin smells resinous and piney, sharp like turpentine, and warmly balsamic. A green edge sits on top. Underneath runs a dry, woody warmth with a bright, herbal terpene lift.

Origin

Exuded resin of Pistacia vera, the pistachio tree, in the cashew family. Pistachio is grown for the nut. In Iran the resin is collected and sold in local markets as a substitute for mastic gum. Its distilled oil is 60.7% alpha-pinene, 14.7% beta-pinene and 7.3% alpha-thujene (Pharmaceutical Biology, 2005). The same genus gives two traded resins: mastic from Pistacia lentiscus, tapped on Chios, and terebinth from Pistacia terebinthus. Perfume copy does not always mean Pistacia vera. Arquiste lists 'Pistachio tree resin (lentisque)', which is mastic.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a resin note in citrus, aromatic and woody perfumes. Parfumo listed it in 5 perfumes on 2026-10-10: 2 in the base, 2 in the heart and 1 in the top. Arquiste's L'Etrog (2011) sets it in the heart with date and jasmine, under citron. John Varvatos Artisan Blu (2016) puts it in the base with stone pine, cedar and patchouli.
