Snake leather is a thematic note, not a material anybody sells. What separates it from plain leather is where perfumers put it. It goes in the top or the heart next to green materials, while plain leather sits in the base of the same fragrance next to castoreum and oud. The result reads as a cooler, drier, greener hide than tanned leather does.

Scent Profile

Leather leads and is the only facet stated in both sources. It is scored at italian-leather's level rather than plain leather's because both accounts describe a smooth, new, non-animalic hide. Green is the facet that makes this note different from the eight leather notes already published, and it is stated twice: 'a bit of sharp greenness and leather mixed in there', plus Parfumo's own 'Green' main accord tag on Serpent. It is above italian-leather's because green is co-named with leather there, not found under it. Smoky comes from one phrase, 'blocky green rose w/ smoke and leather', and is held far below smoked-leather and plain leather because no source names birch tar. Dry_woody is the dryness of a scale rather than a hide, inferred from placement beside galbanum and absinthe. Mineral, animalic and aromatic_herbal sit below threshold. Mineral is the 'hot stone' in the DSH statement, which may belong to another note in that blend, so it stays low with a wide spread.

Origin

No supplier lists it and no house publishes a formula. Parfumo records seven perfumes carrying the note, first in 2012 and last in 2025, and says it often runs through the whole fragrance. Two of the seven give any usable description. DSH Perfumes' Rattlesnake Musk places it in the top with galbanum and a user calls the fragrance 'snake leather tanned with turpentine, creamy fat drips on hot stone'. Vapormundum's Serpent places it with rose thorn and absinthe.

Usage in Perfumery

It is used in desert and reptile-themed compositions as a top or heart leather, always with a green material beside it. Serpent's own main accords are tagged 'Green' and 'Leathery' together, and a reviewer of it locates the leather as 'the interior of a cab with new leather seats' rather than anything tarry.
