Note Profile
Olibanum
Resinous incense from Boswellia trees (also known as Frankincense)
Olibanum has a distinctive resinous aroma with citrusy, peppery, and slightly pine-like facets. Its scent evolves from a bright, lemony top to a warm, balsamic, and subtly smoky drydown. The overall impression is both meditative and luminous, with a gentle mineral undertone.
Olibanum, also known as frankincense, is obtained by tapping the Boswellia tree, primarily found in regions of Somalia, Oman, and India. The tree exudes a milky sap that hardens into golden tears, which are then collected and steam-distilled to yield the essential oil used in perfumery.
Perfumers use olibanum mainly in the heart and base of compositions to impart an incense-like, spiritual depth and to enhance longevity. It blends well with woods, spices, citrus, and florals, and is a key component in both oriental and modern woody fragrances.
Perfumers known for using Frankincense include Dominique Ropion , Quentin Bisch , Alberto Morillas , Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud , Julien Rasquinet , and Annick Menardo .
