Green palm frond with an oily berry
Saw palmetto smells like crushed palm fronds, fresh and green but not sweet. An oily, waxy depth sits under the green, with a faintly rancid edge from the berries. A light herbal tone, a hint of fruit and a faint dry wood complete a dusty, scrubland impression.
Read off the wheel, not a label applied to the note.

Saw palmetto is Serenoa repens, a low palm of the south-east United States. No perfumery-grade extract exists. The only extract is a CO2 oil of the berries made for supplements. In perfume the note is a reconstructed accord.
Perfumers build it as a green, subtropical palm accord for the heart. The frond gives green freshness and the berry gives a fatty, waxy depth. It reads as dry scrubland rather than beach.
