Note Profile
Spruce has a crisp, resinous woody aroma with fresh, green, and slightly camphoraceous facets. It often carries subtle citrus and balsamic undertones, evoking the scent of evergreen forests. As it develops, the note can reveal a gentle sweetness and a clean, invigorating dryness.
Spruce oil is typically steam-distilled from the needles and twigs of various Picea species, most commonly Picea abies (Norway spruce) and Picea mariana (black spruce). The trees are native to boreal and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with sourcing concentrated in North America and Northern Europe.
Perfumers use spruce primarily as a top or heart note to impart freshness and a naturalistic woody character. It blends well with other coniferous notes, citruses, aromatic herbs, and incense materials, and is valued for adding brightness and lift to fougère, chypre, and woody compositions.
