About

Torch ginger is the flower bud of Etlingera elatior, a tropical plant in the ginger family but not the culinary ginger. It smells fresh, floral and slightly sharp, with a lemongrass tang and a peppery edge. It is much milder than ginger root.

Torch Ginger smells fresh, floral and slightly sharp, with a green, lemongrass tang running through it. A peppery, gingery edge shows too, though far milder than the root itself. A citrus, lemony undertone runs alongside the lemongrass. Underneath sits a faint herbal, woody trace, and a tangy sourness that sharpens the whole bud.

Origin

Etlingera elatior is a different genus from Zingiber officinale, the culinary ginger. The flower bud is used in Peranakan cooking, where it is called bunga kantan. No supplier or manufacturer datasheet for a torch ginger absolute or extract was found. The one instrumental study reachable is a Thai food-science paper on dried petals brewed as tea, which names alpha-pinene, 1-dodecanol and dodecanal as the most abundant volatiles.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart note. It is attested 4 times on Parfumo across 3 brands and not at all on Fragrantica, so it is rare. It is far milder than ginger root, which sets it apart from the published ginger note.
