Magnolia bud is the unopened flower bud, not the open flower. It is the same organ split that already separates magnolia leaf from magnolia flower in this genus.

Scent Profile

Magnolia bud smells pungent and aromatic rather than creamy, closer to a strong herbal fragrance than to an open flower. A camphoraceous, cooling, sinus-opening quality runs through it. It is the unopened bud, so a green note sits alongside. A real floral presence remains, with a white floral character behind it. A fresh, peppery spice pungency shows at the edges.

Origin

The dried unopened flower bud of Magnolia biondii, M. denudata or M. liliflora, traded in Chinese medicine as Xin Yi Hua. No perfumery house publishes a magnolia bud material. The term sits in a gap between herb sourcing and fragrance sourcing.

Usage in Perfumery

Used where a magnolia idea is wanted without the creamy weight of the flower. It reads as a green-aromatic top with a floral shadow behind it, closer to magnolia leaf than to magnolia absolute. It joins to eucalyptus, bay, petitgrain and other camphoraceous greens. It can sharpen a white floral heart without adding lactone.
