Magnolia bud is the unopened flower bud, not the open flower. Every source that names the bud material describes it as pungent and aromatic rather than creamy and floral. It is the same organ split that already separates magnolia leaf from magnolia flower in this genus. The vector leads aromatic and camphoraceous, keeps a real floral presence, and carries wide spreads because no perfumery source describes this material at all.

Aromatic_herbal leads because it is the only thing both bud sources actually say: 'strong, distinctive aromatic fragrance' and 'smells pungently fragrant'. Cooling_mentholic comes from the sinus-opening claim, which is a description of a camphoraceous volatile rather than a folk remedy. Green is the unopened bud, and it is supported by the same publisher's account of magnolia leaf as 'green, waxy, faintly spicy' with 'a eucalyptus-like freshness from cineole'. Floral and white_floral are held at real values because the referent is a flower bud of a genus whose flower note is creamy and white. No source says the bud lacks florality, so nothing here zeroes it. Fresh_spice is the pungency the herb sources name. Origin

The dried unopened flower bud of Magnolia biondii, M. denudata or M. liliflora, traded in Chinese medicine as Xin Yi Hua and distilled for its volatile oil. Two herb suppliers describe it as having a 'strong, distinctive aromatic fragrance' that 'smells pungently fragrant when small', and both sell it for 'a direct opening effect on congested nasal passages'. That last is a claim about a camphoraceous, sinus-clearing volatile, which is why cooling_mentholic is scored. No perfumery house publishes a magnolia bud material. The term sits in a gap between herb sourcing and fragrance sourcing.

Usage in Perfumery

Used where a magnolia idea is wanted without the creamy weight of the flower. It reads as a green-aromatic top with a floral shadow behind it, closer to magnolia leaf than to magnolia absolute. It joins to eucalyptus, bay, petitgrain and other camphoraceous greens. It can sharpen a white floral heart without adding lactone.
