About

Saucer magnolia is the big tulip-shaped blossom of Magnolia x soulangeana, read as a sweet floral with a lemon lift, a creamy heart and a cool, watery freshness. It is not the lemony magnolia already published, which reads as the heavier Southern white flower. Providence Perfume Co. separates it from Southern magnolia by its creamy, fruity notes. One perfumer's blog adds a distinct spicy note.

Scent Profile

Saucer Magnolia smells sweet and floral, with a lemony freshness and a cool green edge. It is light rather than heady, a petal floral without a heavy indole. A watery, rain-fresh quality runs through the opening. The heart is creamy, with a soft fruitiness. Some noses find a distinct spice on top.

Origin

Magnolia x soulangeana, the garden hybrid of Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, planted across Europe, North America and East Asia for its early pink-and-white flowers. No supplier sells an essential oil or absolute of it. Fragrantica calls it a fantasy floral note, and everything sold under the name is compounded. Providence Perfume Co. built Magnolia Mist around it from champaca, Michelia alba oil, lemon and other naturals.

Usage in Perfumery

Fragrantica lists 4 perfumes from 4 brands on 2026-10-10: DS&Durga Magnolia City (2021), Providence Perfume Co. Magnolia Mist (2023), Arina Franzén Queen of Thorns Extrait (2023) and Fakoshima Crème de la Crème (2022). Parfumo lists 1, Avon Golden Notes - Moonwind, which puts it in the heart beside coconut, gardenia and rum over musk, sandalwood and vanilla. Use it where magnolia is wanted creamier, fresher and lighter than the published magnolia, and less powdery than pink magnolia.
