Note Profile
Ultravanil is a proprietary Givaudan aroma chemical that delivers an intense vanilla absolute character with pronounced phenolic and slightly smoky undertones. It is a high-impact, long-lasting synthetic vanilla booster designed to enhance and extend vanillic notes in fragrance compositions while minimizing discoloration.
Ultravanil smells like rich, concentrated vanilla absolute, with a dense creamy sweetness and balsamic depth. Alongside the main vanilla tonality, it exhibits a strong phenolic, slightly smoky and powdery facet that adds complexity and keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. On blotter it is notably tenacious, clinging for days or weeks, and maintains a relatively linear gourmand vanilla character over time.
Ultravanil is a synthetic fragrance molecule developed and commercialized by Givaudan, chemically identified as 2-ethoxy-4-methylphenol and often supplied as an 80% solution in dipropylene glycol. It is produced via petrochemical-based synthesis routes similar to those used for vanillin, tailored to yield a high-impact vanillic phenolic structure. The 80%/DPG form is designed for easier handling and weighing in perfumery while preserving the material's strength.
Perfumers use Ultravanil primarily as a gourmand base note and vanilla booster, typically at low levels (1-2% in a 10% dilution) to reinforce other vanillic materials such as vanillin, ethyl vanillin and Isobutavan. It is valued for its high impact, long substantivity and reduced tendency to discolor formulas, making it suitable for creamy, sweet bases in oriental, gourmand and amber compositions. Ultravanil blends well with other sweet and resinous notes like amber, benzoin and patchouli, helping build deep, indulgent vanilla accords with enhanced performance.
