Woodleather® is a Firmenich captive aroma chemical used to build leather accords. It is powerful and it lasts. The name pairs wood with leather, but the only perfumer on record describing it in a finished fragrance talks about leather alone. The vector follows him and keeps the woody half smaller and uncertain.

Scent Profile

Leather leads and is nearly all of what anyone claims for it. It reads as worn hide rather than tar, because no source describes smoke, birch or an animal edge. A dry woody warmth sits under the leather. That woody half is asserted by the material's own name and by one aggregator page, and by nobody who has used it, so it is scored at about half the leather and given the widest spread in the vector. Nothing here rules out a smoky, ambery or musky facet. The sources simply never mention one, and the zeros in those slots carry a wide spread to say so.

Woodleather® is a synthetic molecule owned by Firmenich, now DSM-Firmenich. US trademark 5293402 was filed on 2016-06-13. The filing covers perfumery, cosmetics and flavour chemicals in general and carries no odour description. It is a captive, so Firmenich does not sell it as a raw material. Two Firmenich resale ranges were checked and both list sibling captives such as Leather MD and Leather Oud but not Woodleather. No manufacturer data sheet, odour profile or GC-MS analysis has been published for it.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use it as a base-note leather material, at high dosage, as the spine of a composition rather than a detail. Ilias Ermenidis built Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede around it. He credits it with the fragrance's strength, diffusion and lasting power, and calls it the signature that gives the leather feeling. Nine Parfumo placements across seven brands are recorded for it.
