No 75 opens with a tart blackcurrant syrup and watery accord, tracking Matière Noire's fruity, slightly sharp introduction before it softens into an unusually layered floral heart. Centifolia rose, jasmine sambac, narcissus and cyclamen combine to create the 'luminous floral radiance' the original is celebrated for, and this dupe keeps all four florals rather than simplifying to just rose. The base turns dark and resinous with oud, incense, patchouli and benzoin, mirroring the sacred, smoky depth Louis Vuitton built the fragrance around. It doesn't quite reach the same velvety sweetness in the drydown that makes some fans call the original 'unmistakably luxurious', settling for a slightly drier, more straightforwardly resinous finish instead. Still, the dark-floral-oud contrast at the heart of Matière Noire's identity comes through clearly, making this a fair substitute for anyone drawn to its mysterious, sensual character.
