Duppe Scents Velvet After Dark is an Eau de Parfum. Velvet After Dark opens with Orange Blossom and Pink Pepper, settles into a heart of Jasmine and Coffee, and dries down to a base of Cedar, Patchouli, and Vanilla. Duppe Scents's Velvet After Dark carries an Acquired verdict, a coffee-led wear.

Velvet After Dark undersells Black Opium's signature roasted-coffee heart in favour of a softer berry-and-powder direction, so if the dark, bitter coffee-vanilla contrast is why you love the original, this dupe will not quite get you there.

About

Velvet After Dark opens on pink pepper and orange blossom, a fresh, slightly fruity start before jasmine and a genuine coffee note move in for the heart. That coffee accord is the most important element to get right here, since it is the note that defines YSL's Black Opium, and it does come through, though noticeably lighter and less roasted-bitter than the real thing. The vanilla-patchouli-cedar base wraps things up in a warm, sweet finish that leans softer and more floral-powdery than the original's dark, almost smoky gourmand character. The result is a pleasant, wearable coffee-vanilla scent, but the contrast between bitter coffee and sweet vanilla that makes Black Opium so addictive and instantly recognisable is toned down considerably, so treat this as a gentler cousin rather than a close match for the signature note.
