Matière Première's Vanilla Powder is a niche minimalist take on gourmand vanilla, built from just three complementary accords, coconut powder, white musk and palo santo, layered over a rich Madagascan vanilla absolute for a result that stays soft, clean and comforting rather than sugary. Reviews are genuinely mixed even for the original, with some finding it a beautifully restrained vanilla and others finding it a touch synthetic, so it is a fragrance that divides opinion before a dupe even enters the picture. Velour follows a near-identical structure: airy aldehydes and musk open, vanilla absolute and a creamy vanilla accord form the heart, musk, coconut and palo santo close it out. The powdery vanilla character does come through and the coconut-musk pairing gives a believable soft, comforting quality.
