Inspired by Black Opium is Match Fragrances' budget reading of YSL's 2014 Black Opium, the Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc coffee-vanilla composition that became the defining sweet-gourmand of the mid-2010s. Match's pyramid mirrors the original community pyramid almost note-for-note: pink pepper and orange blossom on top with a pear lift, a coffee-jasmine heart with bitter almond and licorice for the dark gourmand edge, and a vanilla-patchouli base with cedar and cashmere wood for support. The first hour is the strongest match: pink pepper crackles on top while the coffee comes forward almost immediately, with that signature dark-roasted impression sitting clearly over the white florals. By the heart the coffee deepens and the jasmine warms it, with bitter almond adding the marzipan-edge that gives Black Opium its trademark gourmand twist. The dry-down trades on vanilla as the anchor, with patchouli adding earthy weight and cedar-cashmere wood support. Performance is the budget compromise: four to six hours of moderate sillage rather than the long projection wearers report on the YSL bottle. The character is sweet-gourmand-feminine, with autumn and winter the strongest seasons and date, evening, and casual the natural settings. The honest caveat: at fifty millilitres for under thirty pounds, the YSL's polished coffee depth and the addictive sweet-spicy projection that made Black Opium a global hit are softened here, and the dupe reads cleaner and shorter-lasting than the YSL bottle.
