Pearl Fragrances Rooh Khas is a perfume oil. Rooh Khas opens with Bergamot and Mint, settles into a heart of Vetiver, and dries down to a base of Sandalwood and Oakmoss. Pearl Fragrances's Rooh Khas carries a Statement verdict, a woody-led wear.

Rooh Khas, meaning 'soul of vetiver', is a centuries-old Kannauj attar distilled purely from vetiver root, not a designer perfume - there is no original to dupe, and Pearl's oil follows the traditional green, earthy, cooling vetiver profile.

About

Rooh Khas, also spelled Ruh Khus, has no designer original because it isn't a modern perfume brand's creation - it's a traditional Indian attar distilled from the roots of vetiver grass using centuries-old hydro-distillation methods centred on Kannauj, long known as India's perfume capital. The name translates as the soul of khus, or vetiver, and the fragrance is prized as much for its cooling, calming reputation as for its scent. Pearl's version opens with a fresh, faintly minty green top that echoes the smell of damp earth after rain, before a deep, true vetiver heart takes over almost entirely. The base brings in sandalwood and a touch of oakmoss for a smooth, resinous finish rather than anything sweet. There's a slightly smoky, leathery dryness running through the whole composition that's characteristic of good vetiver, and very little sweetness to soften it. As an oil, it's unusually well suited to hot weather, in keeping with vetiver's long-standing reputation as a natural cooling agent in South Asian perfumery, and it lingers as a quiet, earthy skin scent long after the initial green freshness fades.
