Tragedy is Perfume Parlour's read on Juliette Has A Gun's Calamity J, the deliberately un-floral, un-fruity iris-musk dedicated to strong women. A flicker of cinnamon opens it before a powdery iris takes over, lifted by the airy shimmer of Iso E Super, then it settles into a woody-amber base of labdanum, tonka, vanilla, musk, patchouli and a whisper of civet that gives it a smoky, dandyish edge. Against the original, this budget version reads simpler and flatter - the slow-evolving musk and the refined powdery smokiness are pared back - and longevity sits very close to the skin, much like the intimate original. Still, the sophisticated, slightly androgynous iris-musk signature is recognisable, making it an intriguing budget pick for those who like quiet, characterful scents on cool evenings.
