Twilled Fabric chases Serge Lutens' cult Serge Noire, an oriental built on the smell of incense stirred by burnt wood. It opens dark and resinous - smoky incense laced with sharp clove and shadowy ebony woods - before a heart of cinnamon, warm spices and patchouli adds depth and a faint sweetness. Amber rounds out the base into a cosy resinous glow. Where the Lutens original is famously austere, dry and almost confrontational - all flinty incense and gothic restraint - this budget take is gentler and rounder, leaning into the sweeter, spicier side and dropping much of the smoky severity. That makes it easier to wear but less distinctive, and the projection and longevity fall short of the niche benchmark. A characterful cold-weather evening scent for anyone who wants the dark-incense mood without the price or the polarising edge.
