Scentleys Bal Africa is an Eau de Parfum. Bal Africa opens with Bergamot, Lemon, and Blackcurrant, settles into a heart of Jasmine and Violet, and dries down to a base of Musk, Cedar, and Vetiver. Scentleys's Bal Africa carries a Statement verdict, a citrus-led wear.

Scentleys' take on Byredo's Bal d'Afrique (2009) - the citrus-marigold-vetiver icon, simplified into a more generic citrus-woody scent that loses the original's distinctive marigold twist.

About

Bal Africa is Scentleys' interpretation of Byredo's Bal d'Afrique, a citrus-floral-woody fragrance whose signature is African marigold - a bitter-green floral note that cuts through the bergamot-blackcurrant citrus opening before settling into violet, jasmine and a vetiver-cedarwood-amber base. The dupe keeps the citrus-to-woods structure but drops the marigold's distinctive bitter-green character entirely in favour of a more conventional bright citrus, which is the single biggest divergence from the original's memorable DNA. The floral heart and vetiver-cedar base are present but simpler, and the drydown settles faster into a light musky wood. Performance sits at three to five hours of moderate sillage, similar to or slightly below the original's own reportedly variable staying power. A pleasant citrus-woody scent for warm weather and everyday wear, though fans of the real Bal d'Afrique's marigold quirk will notice its absence immediately.
