The Essence Vault's No. 82 goes after YSL Black Opium, one of the most recognisable coffee-gourmand fragrances of the last decade, and the resemblance up top is genuinely close - a jolt of espresso-dark coffee against a sweet pear brightness that mimics the original's rock-chic contrast. Where the original builds real complexity through bitter almond and licorice threading through jasmine and orange blossom, No. 82 keeps its floral heart simpler and sweeter, leaning more on vanilla than on the smoky-bitter edge that gives Black Opium its edgy signature. The base holds up reasonably well with a warm vanilla-cedarwood finish, but it's a more one-dimensional sweetness rather than the original's layered gourmand-floral-woody structure, and it doesn't carry Black Opium's famous 8+ hour, room-filling performance - expect a noticeably shorter and quieter wear time. Still, for a fraction of the price it delivers a recognisable coffee-vanilla thrill for a night out, even if it can't match the depth or staying power of the real thing.
