Jean Patou
Kerléo’s style is often associated with sophisticated florals and rich yet balanced compositions. Jean Patou 1000 exemplifies his use of high concentrations of rare floral absolutes such as jasmine and osmanthus, layered over refined chypre structures. Sublime shows his affinity for luminous, oriental-leaning florals with a textured woody-amber base. His work on reconstituting vintage Patou fragrances demonstrates a rigorous, formula-driven approach to reconstruction, relying strictly on original formulas and available raw materials rather than creative guesswork.
Jean Kerléo (24 February 1932 - 23 July 2025) was a French perfumer best known as in‑house perfumer for Jean Patou from 1967 to 1998/99, where he created key fragrances such as 1000, Sublime, Ma Liberté, Eau de Patou and Voyageur. He began his career in 1955 at Helena Rubinstein in New York, progressing from laboratory assistant to perfumer and becoming head perfumer there in 1963, mainly developing scents for the brand’s cosmetics. In 1965 he received the French Perfumers’ Prize (Prix des Parfumeurs de France). In 1984 he re‑created 12 historic Patou scents, including Amour-Amour, Que sais‑je, Chaldée, Vacances and Colony, from the original formulas. In 1990 he co‑founded the Osmothèque perfume archive in Versailles and served as its president until 2008, overseeing research, preservation and reconstructions of classic and lost perfumes.
