Clue Perfumery
Works concept-first, often translating visual or narrative prompts (such as animated or illustrated scenes) into fragrance. Balances experimental notes and accords with the “wearable and beautiful” side of contemporary perfumery, aiming to capture overlooked, sometimes mundane scenes. Formulates and refines compositions through extensive skin testing and IFRA-compliant safety certification, all within Clue’s Chicago studio.
Laura Oberwetter is an independent American perfumer and co-founder of Clue Perfumery, an indie brand she established with designer and childhood friend Caleb Vanden Boom in Chicago in 2023 (some sources cite 2022). Clue formulates, designs, bottles and ships all products in-house from its Chicago studio and lab. After years of self-directed experimentation with aromatic materials, she formalized her practice through training at the Institute for Art and Olfaction. As Clue’s in-house perfumer, she develops concept-driven fragrances that are IFRA-certified and often inspired by visual and narrative prompts, working closely with Vanden Boom on the translation of ideas between scent and design.
