McCartney often builds fragrances around evocative, narrative concepts tied to specific times, places and moods, frequently aiming for uplifting, happy-leaning compositions. Her work for 4160 Tuesdays includes gourmand-leaning creations such as Over The Chocolate Shop, alongside resinous, incense and woody blends like Eau My Soul, and she also develops atmosphere-driven accords for artistic and site-specific projects such as the scent of Manet’s Bar at the Folies Bergère.
Sarah McCartney is a British artisan perfumer, author and founder of the indie fragrance house 4160 Tuesdays, based in West London. She worked for Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics from 1996 to 2010, becoming head writer and producing the Lush Times while teaching herself about essential oils and materials. In 2011 she formally founded 4160 Tuesdays and continues to hand-make small batches of perfume, often 50 to 200 bottles. Her house won EauMG Independent Fragrance House of the Year in 2014 and Fragrance of the Year in 2015, and was named Independent House of the Year by ÇaFleurBon in 2017. She also creates bespoke scents for institutions and brands, including Manet’s Bar at the Folies Bergère for The Courtauld and a Cheddar Gorge car fragrance for Dacia. McCartney is co-author of The Perfume Companion (Frances Lincoln, 2021) and founded Scenthusiasm, an online perfumery school.
