Vincent Marcello

France Born 0 Parfums Caron

Known for bold 1970s masculine compositions that mix green, herbal and woody-leathery notes. Yatagan exemplifies his use of pine, galbanum and patchouli to create a dry, outdoorsy effect, while Halston Z-14 combines citrus, spices and woods in a polished yet assertive style. His work often contrasts raw, natural facets with more refined chypre or cologne structures.

About

Vincent Marcello was a French perfumer active mainly in the 1970s who worked for International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). He is credited with creating Estée Lauder Private Collection, released in 1974 as a green chypre originally composed for Estée Lauder herself before its wider launch. Marcello went on to compose Caron Yatagan, launched in 1976, a rugged, pine- and galbanum-driven masculine that became one of Caron’s most distinctive perfumes. In the same decade he co-composed Halston Z-14 and Halston 1-12 for Halston, both released in 1976 and often referred to as the “Halston twins” because they debuted together. Despite the impact of these fragrances, very little is documented about his later life and he is reported to have withdrawn from the perfume industry after this period.
