Réminiscence
French niche house rooted in 1970s-style patchouli, amber and musk with a bohemian edge.
Réminiscence is a French jewelry and perfume house created in 1970 by Zoé Coste and Nino Amaddeo. The story began in Juan-les-Pins on the Côte d’Azur, where the founders ran a boutique called Ylang-Ylang offering eye-catching, colorful costume and silver jewelry. In the same year, they decided that scent should be treated as an essential accessory and introduced their first fragrances: Patchouli, Ambre and Musc. These early compositions, built around natural patchouli, amber and musk, established the brand’s link to the bohemian, hippie spirit of the 1970s.
In 1980, the company Reminiscence International Diffusion was formed, allowing the brand to distribute both jewelry and fragrance under the Réminiscence name. The original boutique was later renamed to match the brand. According to the brand’s own history, Réminiscence positions itself as a pioneer of niche perfumery, focusing on instinct, emotion and avoiding standardized, mass-market formulas. Patchouli has remained a central material, spawning an entire Patchouli Collection that includes Le Patchouli, Patchouli Blanc and Patchouli N’Roses, alongside long-running favorites such as Vanille, Ambre and later lines like Les Notes Gourmandes.
Réminiscence is still a family-run business; sources note that the founders’ children, Lilla Amaddeo and Sebastien Coste, joined the company in the 21st century. The brand continues to work with partners such as the house of Robertet and selected perfumers to compose its fragrances. Its catalog spans dozens of scents, but the core identity remains tied to rich patchouli, amber, woods, vanilla and musk, often with a retro, 1970s-inflected character that appeals to those who enjoy assertive, memory-driven perfumes.
A niche, mid house known for patchouli compositions.
The brand began with straightforward hippie-era compositions centered on natural patchouli, amber and musk, reflecting the 1970s Côte d’Azur counterculture. Over time, Réminiscence expanded into themed collections like Les Notes Gourmandes and the Patchouli Collection, adding more gourmand facets, florals and playful twists while keeping patchouli and amber at the core. Recent releases show a somewhat cleaner, more modern polish, but the house still leans into its vintage-inspired, boho DNA rather than chasing mainstream trends.
A solid choice if you love patchouli, amber and a slightly vintage aesthetic, and want niche character without niche pricing. If you dislike strong, retro-leaning bases, this house will likely feel overwhelming.
