About Scotch & Soda

Scotch & Soda is a Dutch fashion brand founded in Amsterdam in 1985 by Laurent Hompes. It began as a wholesale menswear label and later expanded into womenswear, accessories, denim, and children’s collections. The brand is associated with Amsterdam and with clothing that combines vintage references, colourful detailing, and contemporary casual design.

Its fragrance activity developed as an extension of the fashion label, with Barfly among its best-known perfume names. Available fragrance records identify releases from the early 2010s through 2022 and credit perfumers including Fabrice Pellegrin, Philippine Courtière, and Amandine Clerc-Marie. The recorded range includes fresh citrus, floral, woody, aromatic, and sweeter amber-leaning styles rather than one uniform house signature.

Scotch & Soda entered a new ownership phase in 2023, when New York-based brand management company Bluestar Alliance acquired the business after its Dutch operating company entered bankruptcy proceedings. The brand therefore sits between fashion and fragrance: its perfumes are a smaller accessory category within a broader designer lifestyle label, not the central focus of an independent perfume house.

Brand Evolution

The fragrance line appeared after Scotch & Soda had established itself as a fashion label, with Barfly documented among its earlier perfume releases. Later records extend the range through 2022, including editions and additional releases beyond the original Barfly concept. The broader company changed ownership in 2023 when Bluestar Alliance acquired the brand, while fragrance remained a secondary category alongside apparel and accessories.

Quick Verdict

Scotch & Soda is worth considering for easy, wearable designer scents, especially if you like casual citrus, florals, and woods. It is not the strongest choice for complex, highly original perfumery or exceptional longevity.
