African Bluegrass
Note Profile
About
Lemony grass opening over a dusty, animal hay base
Scent Profile
African bluegrass opens sharp, green and herbal, with a lemony, slightly gingery edge like a softer lemongrass. It turns to a grassy, hay-like heart. The drydown is dusty and musty and faintly animal, like well-used bed sheets, unwashed hair and a dog's coat, with an earthy depth and a hint of worn leather. It lasts a very long time.

Origin
African bluegrass is the essential oil of Cymbopogon validus, a wild grass of the South African grasslands. It is steam-distilled from the grass. It is a different plant and oil from lemongrass, citronella and the lawn grass also called bluegrass.
Usage in Perfumery
Natural perfumers use it as a long-lasting base note. One perfumer uses it in the place of ambrette when she wants a cool, grey musky base rather than a warm, beige one. It is also used to add the effect of well-worn leather to a blend.
