About

Belanis is a captive aroma molecule made by Symrise. It smells of aniseed, fresh and spicy. Symrise built it to give an anise effect in place of anethole. Fragrantica adds a white-flower, jasmine side.

Belanis smells of aniseed. It is fresh and strong, with a spicy, aromatic edge. Liquorice and a touch of basil sit close to the anise. Behind it lies a soft white-flower, jasmine-like side, with a trace of saffron and opoponax warmth.

Origin

Belanis is a synthetic molecule. Symrise made it and holds the BELANIS trade mark (US registration 5609453, 2018). Symrise called it a captive it had developed a few years before 2018. The structure and synthesis appear in a 2020 review of odorant chemistry (Armanino et al., Angewandte Chemie). No public CAS number was found.

Usage in Perfumery

Belanis gives an anise note without anethole. Symrise first used it in its de Laire base Poivre Piqué DL, where it pairs with black pepper. In 2024 it was still a captive and only in that base. Fragrantica lists it in perfumes such as Trussardi Walking in Porta Venezia (2022), Laura Biagiotti Roma Uomo Nero Estremo (2025) and Atkinsons Platinum Blend (2025).
