About
Brown ambergris is the middle grade on the weathering ladder. Black is freshest and most faecal, white is most weathered and most mineral, and brown sits between them. Traders describe it as the most versatile grade for all-round use. What sets it apart is not that it averages the other two: it has its own signature, a woodier and tobacco-forward character that neither black nor white is described as having, over a sweetness that black lacks and a faecal trace that white has almost lost.
Scent Profile
Brown ambergris sits between black and white. Its own signature is woody and tobacco-like, over a warm, round body. A pleasant sweetness close to vanilla runs under it, which black lacks. It is earthy, and can be slightly waxy. A faint animal, faecal trace remains, fainter than in black. Salty, marine and mineral touches sit around it, and a soft musky tail stays on the skin. It carries a soft amber, resinous warmth in the base, with a faint balsamic depth.

Origin
A concretion from the digestive tract of the sperm whale, aged at sea. Colour tracks time and oxidation. Ambergris Hunter puts brown as older than black, and Attar Boutique describes the run as a continuous spectrum: between black and white there are browns, dark greys and pale greys.
Usage in Perfumery
A base fixative, used as a tincture. Traders sell brown as the all-round grade. It is strong enough to fix a composition, and clean enough that the perfumer does not have to work around a faecal top.
