Bulgarian Rose Absolute is the solvent extract of Rosa damascena petals grown in Bulgaria. It is a deep, rich, velvety rose, warmer and heavier than the fresh, steam-distilled rose oil. Sources describe it as honey-sweet and warmly spiced, with a jammy fullness and a faint indole.

Scent Profile

Bulgarian rose absolute is a full, deep red rose rather than a dewy, transparent one. Honey sweetness and warm spice run through it. A jammy fruit fullness and a soft powdery touch sit behind the rose. A faint indole keeps it from smelling too clean, and a fresh green note comes through in the drydown.

Origin

Rosa damascena petals are picked by hand in Bulgaria and solvent extracted within a day to give a concrete. The absolute is then washed out of the concrete with alcohol. It takes about 650 kilos of fresh petals to make 1 kilo of absolute. The material is a deep orange-red, slightly viscous liquid.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart note for florals, orientals and chypres, at about 0.5% of a perfume compound on average. IFRA 51 allows up to 2.2% in a fine fragrance. It gives depth and opulence to a floral heart. It contains methyleugenol, so the pure absolute is used with a dermal limit.
