Cetonal
Note Profile
About
Dry velvety orris on pale wood
Scent Profile
Cetonal smells of dry, velvety orris, soft rather than powdery. A pale woody backbone comes in quickly and gives the flower weight. Faint shades of dried tobacco leaf and leather sit in the background. It is quiet on the strip but lasts a long time.

Smell words come from published sources.
A given perfume with this note may use this material, or something else.
Origin
Cetonal is Givaudan's trade name for 2-methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-yl)butanal, CAS 65405-84-7. It is a synthetic aroma chemical, an aldehyde built on the same ring as the ionones. Givaudan files it in its floral family with the words orris and woody.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it in woody and orris accords, and with leather, tobacco and animal notes, where it blends and rounds the formula. It works at low doses, often below one percent. It acts more as a textural modifier than as a note in its own right.
