Iralia is dsm-firmenich's blend of methylionones. It smells of violet and orris as cosmetic powder, carried on a full floral body, with a woody undertone and a small fruity lift. It is the material Francois Coty overdosed in L'Origan and Mitsouko, so it is one of the sounds a reader may already know without knowing its name.

Scent Profile

Floral leads, because the maker's own sheet says 'rich and deeply floral' first and puts everything else after it. Powdery is scored almost level with it: the sheet calls the powdery facet 'potent' and names what it smells of, 'orris and violet', and the one outside source fetched reaches for the same single word, 'beautiful and powdery'. That agreement between a manufacturer page and an unrelated blog is the firmest thing in this file. Dry_woody is the weakest number here. The maker lists 'Woody' as a bare technical descriptor beside 'Violet' and 'Powdery' and never says what carries it, so the facet is real but its size is a guess, and the spread of 0.22 is the honest width. Origin

Synthetic. Iralia is a mixture of methylionone isomers made by dsm-firmenich, not a single molecule. The maker says the blend is weighted toward the more floral trans-alpha-isomethyl-ionone isomer. Methylionones are made from citral, and the family took its name from the violet and iris smells it was first built to reproduce.

Usage in Perfumery

The maker gives a use level of 1 to 10 per cent, and up to 20 to 25 per cent in some formulas. That is a high ceiling and it is why the material can carry a whole structure rather than trim one. It is used to build violet and iris effects, to put powder under a floral heart, and to give volume and length to soft florals.
