About

Coconut orchid is Maxillaria tenuifolia, a small epiphytic orchid grown for one reason: its flowers smell of coconut. Four sources describe it and none of them reaches for floral words. They all say coconut, or they say pina colada.

Scent Profile

Tropical is the note and every source says the same word without hedging: 'just like that of coconuts' (Wikipedia), 'strong coconut-like scent' (Palmer Orchids), 'smells like fresh coconuts' (Orchids-A-More). Lactonic is the creamy body of that coconut, held below the published coconut note's 0.58 because two sources specify fresh coconut rather than dried or grated, and fresh is the thinner, milkier end. Sweet_vanillic is stated twice and directly: 'sweet coconut aroma', 'their sweet smell'. Floral is the one facet no source names, and it is here because the referent is a flower emitting scent into a room, not a fruit. It is set below the coconut facets rather than beside them, because every source that had the chance to call this floral called it coconut instead. Fruity is the pina colada reading, which brings pineapple with it. A small nutty and creamy_woody finish the coconut shape.

Origin

Maxillaria tenuifolia, native to Mexico and Central America, flowering in spring. The scent comes off the live flower and is strong enough to fill a room. No supplier sells an absolute, an essential oil or a headspace reconstruction under this name. Every description found comes from orchid nurseries and growers writing about a plant on a windowsill, not from a perfumer. In a fragrance the note is therefore a construction, most plausibly built from the same lactones that carry coconut.

Attested on 7 Parfumo entries across 3 brands, and on no Fragrantica entry. It is used where a composition wants coconut to arrive as a flower rather than as a dessert, so it reads lighter and less gourmand than coconut flesh. No dose rate was found.
