About

Coolwood is an IFF captive molecule that reads as fresh wood rather than dark wood. It was shown in IFF's 2016 to 2018 Speed Smelling and Secret Smelling showcases alongside Cristalfizz and Aquaflora. Perfumers use it to pull a woody accord towards a damp, mossy chypre, so it behaves as a structural material and not as a headline note. Parfumo records it in 6 perfumes between 2016 and 2024.

Scent Profile

Dry_woody leads because the one trade description of it in use calls it a 'presence boisee fraiche', a fresh woody presence, and no source gives it a second character with equal weight. Mossy_chypre is the effect Nez credits it with in the blend: it confirms a 'chypre legerement humide', a slightly damp chypre. Green comes from the showcase copy, which reads it as brightened vegetation under daylight. Aquatic_ozonic carries the damp half of that same chypre claim and the repeated word 'fresh'. It is held below 0.30 because the only source that calls this material ozonic outright could not be fetched and is not quoted in the dossier. A cooling edge, a little earth and a thin creamy wood sit under all of it.

Origin

A synthetic captive owned by IFF. No public datasheet gives its chemistry, its CAS number or its family, and IFF has not published an open olfactive description for it. Everything known about it comes from trade and community coverage of the showcase compositions it appeared in, notably Anne Flipo's Speed Smelling 2018 entry described by Nez.

Usage in Perfumery

A woody base material used through the whole composition rather than in one phase. Parfumo reports that it 'often occurs throughout the entire fragrance'. Nez describes it working under a patchouli heart to confirm a lightly humid chypre direction, which is the job it is documented doing: freshening and dampening a wood, not carrying a fragrance on its own.
