Orange tree wood is the timber of the bitter or sweet orange tree read as a fragrance note. It sits between a dry pale wood and the citrus the tree is grown for. No supplier sells it as a distilled raw material, so in practice it is a composed accord: orange peel or petitgrain over a woody anchor.

Scent Profile

Dry_woody leads, but not by much. It is a pale, fine-grained wood, closer to a fruit-tree offcut than to cedar, with no pencil-shaving sharpness and no resin. Citrus sits close behind and is the reason anyone names this note at all: bitter orange zest, tart rather than sweet. The only perfumery source that uses the term puts that citrus first, and this vector does not, which is the main thing a reviewer should argue with. Green runs through both as leaf and cut twig, the petitgrain register, bitter and sappy. Underneath there is a faint herbal warmth and a soft creamy edge to the wood, both below the naming threshold and both inferred rather than quoted.

Origin

Citrus sinensis and Citrus aurantium wood. The tree is grown for fruit, and the wood is a pruning and grubbing-up residue. Published work on orange wood covers bioenergy and antioxidant extraction, not distillation for scent. No fragrance house datasheet for an 'Orange Tree Wood' or 'Bois d'Oranger' material was found. The one perfumery use traced is Roger & Gallet's Orange Wood, built from bitter orange, petitgrain and patchouli, which the brand describes as exploring 'all facets of the Bigaradier tree'.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a woody base under a citrus opening, where the point is to keep the orange from evaporating into nothing. It reads as the orchard rather than the fruit bowl. Attested 8 times on Parfumo across 6 brands and not at all on Fragrantica, which fits a term brands reach for in copy rather than one perfumers buy in a bottle.
