Costmary
Note Profile
About
Sweet spearmint herb with a balsamic, green edge
Scent Profile
Costmary smells sweet and minty, like spearmint gum, with a fresh green, herbaceous body. A mild balsamic warmth sits under the mint, which spearmint does not have. A soft floral touch shows in the oil. Some plants lean towards clean camphor or wintergreen instead of mint.

Origin
Costmary, also called alecost, is Tanacetum balsamita, a daisy-family garden herb and not a true mint. Its leaves keep their scent when dried, and an essential oil is distilled from the plant. Chemotypes differ: most are rich in carvone, others in thujone or camphor.
Usage in Perfumery
One oil supplier lists it as a middle note. No source describes its use in perfumery beyond that. It appears by name in a small number of perfumes as a herbal accent.
