Note Profile
Bitter, aromatic wormwood
Artemisia, also known as wormwood, has a bitter, green, and intensely aromatic scent with herbal and slightly camphoraceous nuances. It can display subtle licorice and anise facets, evolving to reveal a dry, earthy undertone. The aroma is sharp and penetrating, lending a distinctive edge to compositions.
Artemisia is derived from the leaves and flowering tops of Artemisia absinthium and related species, typically through steam distillation. It is native to temperate regions of Eurasia and is cultivated for both perfumery and traditional uses.
Perfumers use artemisia mainly in the top and heart notes to impart a bitter-green, aromatic lift, often in fougère, chypre, and herbal accords. It blends well with citrus, lavender, oakmoss, and woody notes, and is valued for its ability to add complexity and freshness.
Perfumers known for using Artemisia include Carlos Benaïm , Alberto Morillas , Anne Flipo , Bertrand Duchaufour , Christian Provenzano , and Dominique Ropion .
