Note Profile
Cool, crisp green with waxy and slightly bitter character
Ivy has a cool, crisp green scent with pronounced leafy and waxy facets, accompanied by a subtle bitterness. It evokes the aroma of freshly crushed leaves and moist foliage, sometimes with a faint earthy undertone. The note remains linear, maintaining its sharp green character throughout its evaporation.
Natural ivy absolute is rarely used due to low yield and potential toxicity, so the note is typically recreated using aroma chemicals such as cis-3-hexenol and other green aldehydes. These materials are blended to mimic the distinctive scent of ivy leaves. The note is inspired by the Hedera helix plant, common in temperate regions.
Perfumers use ivy as a top or heart note to impart freshness and a naturalistic green effect, often in chypre, fougère, and modern green compositions. It pairs well with other green notes, florals, and woody accords, providing a crisp, clean counterpoint. Ivy is valued for its ability to evoke outdoor, verdant atmospheres.
Perfumers known for using Ivy include Annick Menardo , and Christine Nagel .
