Steam-distilled oil of the turmeric leaf. Spicy, and past that the two suppliers who sell it disagree. One hears citrus and freshness, the other earth and warmth.

Scent Profile

Spicy is the one word both trade sources use, and everything past it is contested. Warm_spice and fresh_spice split that word rather than choose between its two readings. India Essential Oils says 'spicy, earthy, warm odor'. IFF/LMR says 'spicy and aromatic note with a sparkling citrusy facet on top'. Those are the warm and the fresh sense of one adjective. Citrus is IFF's 'sparkling citrusy facet on top, reminiscent of elemi', and it is the largest disagreement in the file, because the second supplier does not mention citrus at all. Earthy is the reverse case: India Essential Oils names it and IFF does not. Aromatic_herbal carries IFF's 'aromatic' and its 'unique natural freshness'. The two descriptions point in opposite directions, so both are scored at moderate height with wide spreads rather than one being preferred. That is why every value here sits between 0.35 and and none of them leads. Amber_resinous acknowledges the elemi comparison without asserting resin, because IFF scopes 'reminiscent of elemi' to the citrus facet and not to the body. Green is left at zero because no source calls this leaf oil green, which is worth saying out loud for a leaf note.

Origin

Steam-distilled from the leaves of Curcuma longa, the turmeric plant, in India. The rhizome is the part that has always been distilled. The leaves were agrowaste, and IFF/LMR built the material out of that waste and says so plainly: 'The turmeric leaves thrown away by the farmers or used as compost contained interesting scented molecules. Extracting them produces a one-of-a-kind, highly sustainable product.' A study in PubMed Central confirms the leaf oil is chemically its own thing, naming alpha-phellandrene, 2-carene and eucalyptol as predominant, which is not the rhizome's composition.
