About
Fir tree wood is the timber of a true fir. It is not the needle oil and not the balsam. Trade descriptions of 'fir' describe balsam absolute or needle oil, both taken from twigs and needles. Those are published here as fir, fir-resin and canadian-fir-balsam. Fir timber itself has little smell. Wood references say white fir wood has no distinctive odour. What odour softwood has comes mostly from fatty-acid breakdown products and lignin phenolics, not from the terpenes that make needles sharp and green.
Scent Profile
Fir Tree Wood smells quiet and dry, a soft timber note rather than a sharp resinous one. A faint vanilla-like sweetness runs through it, close to the vanilla character found in other softwoods. A light, balsamic resin trace sits underneath, thinner than in pine. A whisper of green, grassy lift stays faint in the background.

Origin
Sawn or milled wood of a true fir, genus Abies. No supplier sells a material under this name. The only measurement found is Schreiner et al. (2020) in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. It quantified nine odour-active compounds across five softwoods, white fir (Abies concolor) among them. Hexanal, octanal, (E)-non-2-enal, p-cresol, vanillin and thymoquinone dominated the wood odour of the group. The study confirmed its odour model only for Scots pine and incense cedar, not for fir. Any perfumery use of this note is a reconstruction, not a distillate.
Usage in Perfumery
13 perfumes listed this note on 2026-10-10. Several are forest themes. They set it beside fir needle, pine needle, cedarwood, labdanum or oakmoss. Two others set it beside Cashmeran. Reviewers of Hugo Just Different describe a resinous, nearly medicinal fir tone in it, not bare timber. Use it where a soft pale wood is wanted with a faint vanillic edge. Use fir, fir-resin or canadian-fir-balsam when the green conifer lift is the point.
