Maile
Note Profile
About
Woodsy green vine with coumarin, vanilla and a hint of spice
Scent Profile
Maile smells woodsy and leafy, with a warm, sweet coumarin note like soft hay. A hint of vanilla and a touch of spice sit over the wood. The scent grows stronger as the leaves and bark dry.

Origin
Maile is a Pacific vine, Alyxia stellata, used for Hawaiian lei. The scent sits in the bark and leaves, not the flowers. Gatherers strip the bark and leaves from the woody pith, which frees a scented milky sap.
Usage in Perfumery
Maile is best known in lei and for scenting kapa cloth, where the leaves stay fragrant for days. In perfumery the name appears as a note that recalls the lei. No supplier of a maile extract was found.
