Muskroot
Note Profile
About
Earthy plant musk with animalic warmth
Scent Profile
Muskroot smells of musk carried on damp earth. A soft animal warmth and a slightly leathery sweetness sit with it, close to angelica root and valerian. A balsamic, resinous note and a herbal, faintly powdery green tone run underneath. It dries to a warm, musky base.

Origin
Muskroot, also called sumbul, is the root of Ferula sumbul (syn. Ferula moschata), a plant of central Asia. The dried root is used, and an essential oil is also sold. It was brought to Russia in 1835 as a substitute for musk.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it as a plant musk and a fixative in the base. Its musk smell is weak in the dry root and comes out after contact with water. It is a rare material, sold by botanical suppliers rather than by the large houses.
