Cocoa leaf is the dried foliage of Theobroma cacao, not the bean, the shell or the pod. Sources that describe the leaf itself describe something much milder than roasted cocoa: a subtle chocolate aroma over earthy depth, and a brewed infusion likened to a mild black tea without bitterness. Nothing here is the roasted, pyrazine-driven smell that most 'cocoa' perfumery material actually is.

Coffee_cacao leads because it is the facet the one trade source names twice, as 'a subtle chocolate aroma' and as 'natural chocolatey essence'. It is capped well under cacao-shell at 0.62 and roasted-cocoa at 0.85 on the source's own word, 'subtle', and because a green leaf has none of the roasting that drives those two. Tobacco_hay is the dried-leaf and brewed-tea character. The direct-experience source says the infusion 'tastes a bit like a mild black tea without bitterness', and the published Black Tea note leads on tobacco_hay, so this reads as a lighter version of the same thing. Earthy is the trade source's second named quality, given twice as 'earthy depth' and 'earthy tones'. Green is the leaf itself, and it is scored far below the 0.78 to 0.85 that every other published leaf carries for a stated reason: both descriptive sources are about the dried leaf, not the fresh one, and the one perfumer who used the note put 'Green leaves' in the top of his pyramid as a separate ingredient while cocoa leaf sat in the heart. Reading a dominant green into this note would contradict the only structural evidence there is. Aromatic_herbal is the infusion character, tea and chai base rather than crushed foliage, named by the blog source that drinks it daily. Below the line sit dry_woody, from the perfumer's pairing with dry woods in the heart, and nutty.

Origin

Botanical. Theobroma cacao, Malvaceae. Sold dried as a culinary and tea leaf. No perfumery-grade material was found: no absolute, no CO2 extract, no supplier odour sheet, and no GC-MS profile for the leaf specifically.

Usage in Perfumery

Six Parfumo placements across one brand, none in Fragrantica. The one fragrance built around it, Runeford's Cacao Leaf (2025), puts cocoa leaf in the heart beside black tea and dry woods, and pushes cocoa shell down into the base beside amber, earthy notes, musk and woods. The perfumer treats leaf and shell as two different registers rather than one cocoa block.
