About

Witch hazel, a shrub whose leaves and bark are distilled to a brown aromatic fraction.

Scent Profile

Witch hazel smells fresh and herbal, clean and a little medicinal. A light woody note sits under it with a soft, balsamic warmth. A faint floral sweetness can show at the edges.

Origin

Hamamelis virginiana and related species (Hamamelidaceae). The trade material is a volatile fraction distilled from the leaves and bark. Suppliers disagree on the process: one says steam distillation, another an infusion. The flowers of H. mollis and H. vernalis are scented, but no flower extract was found.

Usage in Perfumery

A quiet botanical blender. Suppliers suggest it with cedarwood, fir, pine, frankincense, benzoin, hay, tonka and vanilla. On Parfumo it is named in about 15 perfumes, and nothing says whether they mean the distillate or the blossom.
