About

Essential oil steam-distilled from the needles and small branches of a true cedar, Cedrus deodara in the one producer description found. It is the foliage, not the wood. The one first-hand account calls it a green-tea theme over woody sweet pine with mild herbal spice.

Scent Profile

Green is the lead, and the only producer with a first-hand description calls it a green-tea theme twice over. Dry_woody is the woody sweet pine in the same description. Aromatic_herbal and fresh_spice split the mild herbal spice that the same source names; nothing in the evidence says which of the two carries more, so both hold spreads and. Amber_resinous is the resin of a conifer needle read low, because no source calls this oil balsamic and the wood oils are the ones that get that word. Cooling_mentholic is deliberately low and widely spread at 0.18: the published cedar-leaf note is camphor-driven at 0.72, but that note is Thuja occidentalis and thujone-based, and no source calls the Cedrus needle oil camphorous. Nutty is the weakest value here, inferred from benzaldehyde at 19.4 per cent of the sampled oil rather than from anyone's nose. Warm_spice, sweet_vanillic and citrus are the spicy undertones and the pinene fraction, held low.

Origin

Himalayan or deodar cedar, Cedrus deodara, of the western Himalaya. The oil comes from pruned needles and small branches rather than from heartwood, so it is a by-product of forestry rather than a separate crop. It is rare in trade; commercial cedarwood oil almost always means the wood.

Usage in Perfumery

Attested on 16 Parfumo entries and none on Fragrantica. Used for a fresh coniferous top and heart in forest and fougere accords, where the wood oils are too heavy and too dry.
