About

Essential oil steam-distilled from the needles and small branches of a true cedar, Cedrus deodara in the one producer description found. It is the foliage, not the wood. The one first-hand account calls it a green-tea theme over woody sweet pine with mild herbal spice.

Cedar Needle smells green, almost like green tea, laid over a sweet, woody pine. A mild, spicy herbal note runs alongside it. It stays a light foliage smell rather than a heavy wood, with only the faintest traces of resin and nuttiness beneath. It is the needles and branches, not the timber.

Origin

Himalayan or deodar cedar, Cedrus deodara, of the western Himalaya. The oil comes from pruned needles and small branches rather than from heartwood, so it is a by-product of forestry rather than a separate crop. It is rare in trade; commercial cedarwood oil almost always means the wood.

Usage in Perfumery

Attested on 16 Parfumo entries and none on Fragrantica. Used for a fresh coniferous top and heart in forest and fougere accords, where the wood oils are too heavy and too dry.
