Chuan Xiong
Note Profile
About
Warm medicinal celery root
Scent Profile
Chuan xiong opens sharp and pungent, with warm, herbaceous celery and a clear medicinal edge, like a Chinese herbal pharmacy drawer pulled open. A rich, almost buttery sweetness builds underneath. It is warmer and more complex than lovage, slightly musty, and it fades to a quiet warm herbal trace that lasts.

Origin
Chuan xiong is the dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong (also listed as L. striatum or L. wallichii), the Sichuan lovage of Chinese medicine. It is extracted as an essential oil or a CO2 extract, yellow to brownish in colour. The main odour compounds are phthalide lactones, chiefly ligustilide and senkyunolide, with sabinene, limonene and selinene.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it in the heart as an aromatic modifier, at medium strength. It brings a warm celery and herbal-pharmacy effect to herbal, spicy and woody accords. Its ligustilide is unstable, so old stock smells different from fresh.
