Steam-distilled oil of the Australian blue cypress tree. A sweet, resinous base wood that trade sources place nearer sandalwood than cypress, with a honeyed-smoky dryness.
Scent Profile
Dry_woody leads and every source fetched says woody first. Amber_resinous is the second thing two sources agree on independently: Premiere Peau's 'resinous heart' and NCC's 'slightly balsamic notes'. Creamy_woody sits level with it on the strength of the one claim that separates this oil from the tree it is named after, Rising Sun's 'sweet and creamy woody, the fragrance of our Blue Cypress Essential Oil is more similar to sandalwood than cypress'. That claim comes from a single retailer, so the spread on creamy_woody, the widest here. Honeyed carries Premiere Peau's 'sweetness reminiscent of honeyed pine' and its 'sweet, almost honey-like undertone'. Green is the opening only: 'it opens fresh and green' and 'the green qualities remain'. Smoky rests on one word from one source, 'woody-smoky', so it also carries a wide spread. Below the naming line, mineral holds 'drier and more mineral than Virginian cedarwood' plus the 'almost metallic-woody transparency' at low dose. Fruity is NCC's 'subtle fruity' and nothing more. Cooling_mentholic is held rather than zero: the only claim anyone makes is a relative one, 'less camphoric than Atlas cedar', and less is not none.

Origin
Callitris intratropica, a conifer of northern Australia. NCC Cosmetics states the oil is 'steam distilled from the leaves and branches of the native blue cypress tree'. The oil is famous for its blue colour, which is chemistry rather than smell: Rising Sun Botanicals gives its own batch as '0.61% chamazulene and 0.31% guaiazulene', and Premiere Peau attributes the blue to 'high guaiazulene content'. Despite the trade name the tree is a different genus from Cupressus sempervirens, the cypress of Mediterranean perfumery.
Usage in Perfumery
A base note and a fixative. All three sources fetched say so independently: Premiere Peau calls it 'a base note' that 'functions as a fixative in woody and incense compositions', NCC says it 'works beautifully as a base note or fixative, helping to anchor lighter fragrances', and Rising Sun says it 'has a fixative effect that is valued by perfumers'. Premiere Peau places it 'alongside vetiver, patchouli, and oud in dark-woody accords' and adds that 'at low dosage, it adds a clean, almost metallic-woody transparency'. Attested 13 times on Fragrantica and absent from the other note list.
