About

Pu-erh tea: dark, fermented tea leaf, and the dark brew made from it.

Scent Profile

Pu-erh smells of damp earth first, like garden soil or a forest floor after rain, with a mushroom note close behind. Wet wood and a pile of autumn leaves give it body. Behind that sit soft, sweet leather, dry hay and a little tobacco, with a cool wet-stone edge. It is darker and damper than black tea and carries none of its malt.

Origin

The leaf of the tea plant. It is the only tea that is truly fermented by moulds, bacteria and yeasts rather than only oxidised. Ripe (shou) pu-erh is wet-piled. Raw (sheng) pu-erh is aged.

Usage in Perfumery

Read as a dark tea note, with earth and damp wood rather than the malt of black tea. No perfumery source describing the note was found, so the use is read from the drink.
